Outdoor games in autumn as the days grow shorter

What to play outdoors in autumn, how to dress and why a reflector should always be carried in the dark.

Autumn is a good time for outdoor play: the wind is perfect for flying a kite, the weather is cooler than in summer for playing football, and the sandpit can be used until the frost arrives.

Clothing

Layered clothing works best: the bottom layer keeps the body dry, while the outer layer protects against wind and rain. It is a good idea to bring a hat and gloves even if the morning seems warm.

Reflector

In Estonia, a pedestrian travelling on a road in the dark must wear a reflector or reflective vest if they are not walking on a lit road. It is worth attaching reflectors to both the child’s jacket and schoolbag so they are always available.

Games suited to a short day

  • Kite flying: a windy autumn day is the best time for it.
  • Ball games: fast-paced games keep you warm.
  • Scooter and bicycle: in daylight and with a helmet.
  • Sandpit: until the ground freezes, then bring the buckets and spades indoors to dry.
